Arkansas became an at-large selection for the Sugar Bowl this year when the SEC sent the Auburn Tigers to the National Championship game. Ohio State was selected from the Big Ten after finishing 6th overall in the BCS but behind Wisconsin which got the automatic bid to the Rose Bowl. Overall, seven Big Ten teams were placed into bowl games this season with the other Big Ten title holder, Michigan State, travelling to Orlando Florida to play Alabama in the Capital One Bowl.
The Sugar Bowl this year represents Arkansas’ first ever BCS game while the game gives Ohio State another shot at the SEC. Ryan Mallet leads the Razorbacks after leaving Michigan during their transition to Head Coach Rich Rodriguez. Mallet has thrown for almost 3,600 yards this season with 9 games over 300 yards passing. Arkansas also has a 1,000 yard rusher in Knile Davis.
Ohio State brings a very good defense against the prolific offense of Arkansas. Ranked second in the country over-all, they will be tested once again. This is the Buckeyes 11th straight year in a bowl game and their 9th BCS bowl game, which is a national record. Ohio State feels their current team is capable of facing any conference this year regardless of past troubles with SEC teams.
