Re: PA QB Terrelle Pryor   (United States)
Even on Basketball Court, Focus Is on Football Star
Published: February 2, 2008

VILLANOVA, Pa. — Terrelle Pryor was one of the best basketball players on the court Friday night as his team, Jeannette High School of western Pennsylvania, played Chester High School, a six-time defending district champion. In the first quarter, Pryor drew cheers by finishing a breakaway with a thunderous one-handed slam.

Terrelle Pryor, widely considered the country’s top football recruit, has many guessing about which college he will choose.

About 1,800 fans were there for part of an elite eight-team invitational. But many of them were not interested in Pryor’s nose for the basket. Pryor, who is a senior, also happens to be one of the most highly regarded football recruits in the country.

“I think the best comparison you could make to the last five, six years would probably be Vince Young,” Bob Lichtenfels, a recruiting analyst for Scout.com, said, referring to the Tennessee Titans quarterback who won a national title in college at Texas. “But, personally, I think he’s going to be better than Vince Young. That’s nothing against Vince. He’s a great player. Terrelle is just a difference maker.”

Pryor is a 6-foot-6, 230-pound quarterback who seems to have it all: arm strength, agility and enough speed to consistently leave defenders in his wake. He has been ranked as the country’s top prospect by several recruiting services. He runs the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds, ideal for a spread offense. He is also the only player from Pennsylvania to finish his high school career with more than 4,000 yards rushing and 4,000 yards passing.

The buzz about Pryor is approaching a crescendo. On Wednesday, football recruits can begin signing binding letters of intent with colleges. Almost all of the top players have already made their decisions. Pryor has not, which has fans across the country and the blogosphere biting their nails.

Pryor is expected to improve the fortunes of whichever program he chooses. The finalists appear to be Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and Oregon. Penn State Coach Joe Paterno made a rare recruiting trip to Jeannette on Wednesday. Michigan’s Rich Rodriguez and Ohio State’s Jim Tressel are expected to attend Jeannette’s home game on Saturday. Coaches from other programs may have slipped into the Pavilion on Villanova’s campus on Friday for a last-ditch sales pitch.

The fans have made an impression, too. Two hours before the Jeannette-Chester game, they lined up to get Pryor’s autograph. Pryor’s basketball coach, Jim Nesser, had one of his assistants turn them away.

“Everywhere we go, he’s like a rock star,” Nesser said.

Pryor, who did not speak to the news media before the game, is used to the attention by now, having led Jeannette to a state championship in football in December. Highlights of the Jayhawks’ 49-21 victory over Dunmore have attracted more than 200,000 hits on YouTube. A football he recently signed appeared on eBay for $99.99.

Charlie Batch, the Pittsburgh Steelers backup quarterback, has acted as an adviser for Pryor and tagged along for a recruiting trip to Michigan.

“It’s like watching a boy become a man,” Batch said during a telephone interview. “He’s going through so much in such a short period of time. From what I see, he’s handling it well.

“The things he’s able to do on the field, it’s beyond what anyone’s seen in years. He’s accomplished all that he can and now he’s ready for the next challenge. The sky’s the limit for him.”

Last month, Pryor said he intended to announce which university he would attend on Wednesday, which is the national signing day. But two days ago, he hinted he might delay the decision so he could visit Oregon.

Recruits have until April 1 to make their choice.

For the moment, Pryor seems more focused on basketball than football. And his fans seem just fine with that. As Pryor hit a silky jumper from the top of the key against Chester on Friday, people in the stands howled. Pryor has said he wanted to play basketball in college, too. Nesser referred to him as a point forward.

Dave Burman, a 49-year-old from Lewistown, Pa., traveled several hours to watch the team he roots for, Chester, compete against Jeannette. He and a family friend, an 11-year-old named Jordan, wanted to ask Pryor for an autograph before the game. But they lingered for a beat too long, and Pryor showed off his speed heading in the opposite direction.

“I’ve been following him forever,” Burman said. “We almost met him. He walked away. But I was close.”

Everyone seems to be following Pryor’s movements these days. And the clock is ticking.

ANNOUNCEMENT EXPECTED: Terrelle Pryor likely to make choice Wednesday at noon

JEANNETTE, Pa. — Terrelle Pryor, considered the nation’s top unsigned high school football player, will announce his choice — probably either Michigan or Ohio State — during a nationally televised news conference Wednesday.

Pryor, a 6-foot-6 Jeannette High School quarterback chosen Sunday as the Parade Magazine player of the year, said last week he might delay his decision past the national letter of intent day Wednesday. He could wait until as late as April 1 to sign.

Pryor was weighing whether to visit Oregon and, possibly, Penn State, but he said Monday he has ruled out playing for Oregon. The Ducks were seen as a strong contender for Pryor because they run the spread offense Pryor prefers.

Pryor, also an all-state basketball star, has been juggling recruiting visits and meetings with his basketball games. Ohio State coach Jim Tressel, Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez and assistants from both schools were at Jeannette High’s game Saturday night.

Pryor also won’t make an official visit to Penn State, but Pryor said that wasn’t a problem because he is so acquainted with the school and its staff.

Penn State coach Joe Paterno visited last week with Pryor, the only quarterback in Pennsylvania high school history to run for and throw for more than 4,000 yards.

Pryor’s announcement will be made in the school gym and will be televised by ESPNU and CSTV. Pryor is considered the top player in the country by Scout.com and Rivals.com and was chosen as the MVP last month in U.S. Army All-American game in San Antonio.

Jeannette's Pryor won't sign today

By Paul Schofield
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Wednesday, February 6, 2008

Jeannette quarterback Terrelle Pryor said late Tuesday night that he changed his mind and is not planning to sign a national letter of intent today.

"I'm 100 percent sure I'm not signing," Pryor said. "It's a tough decision and I'm still trying to decide between Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State."

Pryor did say he has eliminated Oregon and told the Oregon coaches the school was too far from home. Pryor said he'll probably make a visit to Penn State.

Wednesday is the first day high school football players can sign a binding letter of intent. Pryor was expected to announce his decision at noon on ESPNU and CSTV, but Jeannette coach Ray Reitz said Pryor still plans to meet with the media to answer a few questions.

"Terrelle is not sure," Reitz said. "He needs more time."

Pryor's mother, Thomasina (Toni) Pryor, said he told her earlier Tuesday he was 50/50 about making a decision.

"It stresses me out to see him stressed out," Toni Pryor said. "I don't care where he goes. I just want him to go where he'll be happy and content."

At the Michigan-Ohio State basketball game last night, Ohio State students displayed signs that said: "Terrelle Pryor, come to Ohio State!" The ESPN broadcast crew said Michigan basketball coach John Beilein indicated that if Pryor selected Michigan, he certainly can play basketball.

If Pryor selects Ohio State, he may have to start his collegiate career behind fifth-year senior Todd Boeckman. The 6-foot-5, 243-pound Boeckman completed 191 of 299 passes for 2,379 yards, 25 touchdowns and 14 interceptions for the Buckeyes.

At Michigan, Pryor may have the opportunity to play immediately in coach Rich Rodriguez's spread offense. Former starter Chad Henne has no more eligibility remaining and backup Ryan Mallett transferred.

"When we talked (Tuesday morning), I gave him my choice and he gave me his," said Pryor's father, Craig. "They weren't the same. But it's his decision."

Craig Pryor said he did not pick Ohio State, but he did not indicate what school his son chose.

Craig Pryor also told his son that playing immediately might not be the best way to make progress. He said it wouldn't hurt if he sat back and watched while he tries to learn to read defenses.

"He's not worried about playing right away," Craig Pryor said. "It will give him time to learn and adjust to the speed of the game."

Pryor thrived at Jeannette on the football field and on the basketball court. He became the first high school football player in the state to run for and throw for more than 4,000 yards in his career. He recently surpassed the 2,000-point and 1,000-rebound mark in basketball.

But making a decision hasn't been easy.

"Terrelle likes to please everyone," Craig Pryor said. "He's going to make someone unhappy when he makes his decision."

Re: PA QB Terrelle Pryor   (United States)

Recruiting: Pryor down to Ohio State, Penn State

The nation's number one recruit, quarterback Terrelle Pryor, has removed Michigan and Oregon from his short list.  That leaves only Ohio State and Penn State.

Four days ago he said that he would make his decision known at 12:05 on Tender Day , Wednesday the 6th.  He did not.

He has now ruled out Michigan and Oregon.  The decision would be bad for anybody, but it is particularly bad for the Wolverines, who don't have a suitable quarterback available for next season.

Worse still, Rodriguez' recruiting antics over the past few weeks have offended the entire conference.  There is considerable speculation that what he has done may be working against him.
Recruiting ethics, plus missing documents at West Virginia, have raised red flags across the country.
