DE/LB Mark Johnson  (United States)
DL Mark Johnson leaves Ohio State

Associated Press - October 1, 2008 6:15 PM ET

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - What's brewing today with the 2008 Ohio State Buckeyes ...

BUCKEYES BUZZ:@ Ohio State was twice socked for having too many men on the field or for making an improper substitution in the victory over Minnesota.

The Buckeyes frequently have far more than 11 players on the field at a time between plays, with some coming on to replace players and others hurrying off. The area between the huddle and the sideline looks like a bus station, with people rushing to get on or off the field.

"We're going to have to do it better than we did it, because not only did we get two penalties, we were warned, 'Hey, you know, you've got like 15 guys out there at a time,'" coach Jim Tressel said, referring to an official's joke. "And I told the ref, 'Obviously it's not to deceive them, because we're deceived. We're not even sure who's supposed to be out there.'"

EMPTY JERSEY:@ Mark Johnson, a 6-foot-3, 250-pound sophomore DL from California has left the program.

"He made a decision he wanted to go somewhere else to get a little bit more playing time and wanted to do so before school started so he could get enrolled," Tressel said.

When recruiting, Tressel said coaches always have to figure that some guys will drop out or transfer.

"Quite honestly in recruiting, when you start talking about how many you're going to have on scholarship, you always build in the thought that there's going to be some attrition, whether it's an in injured guy, a guy who leaves," he said.

Mark Johnson

Not major news when you lose a fourth-string defense end, but redshirt sophomore Mark Johnson has decided to transfer.

The California native might have seen the writing on the wall when he didn't make the 70-man travel squad for the USC game.

He's the third member of the class of 2006 to leave, joining defensive end Walter Dublin and quarterback Antonio Henton. Fullback Aram Olson also had his career ended by injury.

Behind a 2005 class that has served as the backbone of the team for three years, the 20-player 2006 class has done its part, producing nine players that have started, led by tailback Beanie Wells.

Safety Kurt Coleman, linebacker Ross Homan, defensive end Thaddeus Gibson, right tackle Bryant Browning, cornerback Chimdi Chekwa, defensive tackle Dexter Larimore, tight end Jake Ballard and departed junior college linebacker Larry Grant are the others. Receiver Ray Small, defensive lineman Rob Rose and nickelback Tyler Moeller have also made contributions.

Johnson was part of five-man linebacker group in the class brought in with the departures of A.J. Hawk, Bobby Carpenter and Anthony Schlegel.

Johnson, Gibson, Homan and Grant were all four-star prospects, while Moeller was a three-star prospect. With Gibson a defensive end, Moeller a nickelback, and Grant and Johnson gone, Homan's the only one left still at linebacker.

At 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, Johnson offered an intriguing mix of size and speed but suffered a shoulder injury his first season, redshirted and never found his way back into the mix, even after he was moved to defensive end.
